Zev fell back to sleep, and I managed to catch another hour or so before I was back up. This time, I was extra careful to let him sleep even though I spent a good amount of time just watching him do it. I was relieved to see that even though faint circles still remained under his eyes, his overall color was back to normal. The lines around his eyes and mouth had eased, and his breathing was slow and steady. When my last fragments of anxiety were soothed away, I got up, grabbed my phone, and headed to the living room to start my day.
Just because we were in Vegas didnât mean I wasnât on the clock. I went through emails and pulled up Sabellaâs flight so I could track it. She was already in the air, and so far, it looked like she would be on time. I also had a message from the car rental company explaining they would be calling me in a couple more hours to confirm Sabellaâs reservation. By the time they did, I was on my fourth cup of coffee, and while my nerves were far from steady, I was definitely wired.
Hyped on caffeine, I may have gotten a little demanding with the reservation clerk, but with no idea who Damonâs target wasâme, Zev, or bothâthere was no way I wasnât taking every available precaution when picking up my great-aunt. That included upgrading her rental with the companyâs highest security package, which meant the luxury four-door sedan would be tricked out with multifaceted defensive wards.
As much as I appreciated the added security, it didnât alleviate all my concerns. I would have to deal with those lingering worries directly, including that Zev insisted on coming with me to pick up Sabella. Continuing the conversation that had started when he was in the shower, I asked the stubborn jackass, who was currently pulling on a shirt as I finished braiding my hair, âDo you really think thatâs wise?â
âIâm fine, Rory.â Despite being muffled by his shirt, the exasperation in his voice was noticeable. His head popped through the collar as he tugged the material into place. He raked a hand through his damp hair then stepped in close until his body was pressed against mine.
I shot him a dark look then went back to braiding my hair. âGrayson said you were to take it easy.â
Being busy tying off my hair left me wide-open when his hands hit the bathroom counter to create a flesh-and-bone cage. In the mirror, his gaze caught and held mine with a warmth he shared only with me, but it did jack all to ease his steely edge of determination. âIâm coming with you.â
âFine.â It came out snappy, mainly because I knew arguing would get me nowhere.
He pressed his lips against the back of my neck, and goosebumps ran up and down my spine, loosening it enough that I sank back into him. He rested his chin on my shoulder. âI really am okay.
